Moving individual posts / Displaying individual posts — APG vNext Guide

This thread covers Moving individual posts / Displaying individual posts, a common task for APG vNext administrators managing their forum environment over time.

Upgrade Best Practices

  • Always back up first: Full SQL Server backup plus a copy of all application files, especially custom skins and web.config.
  • Test on staging: Perform the upgrade on a staging environment before touching production.
  • Follow the upgrade SQL scripts in order: Each version has a corresponding database upgrade script — run them sequentially.
  • Review the changelog: Check for any breaking changes or configuration steps specific to the target version.

Moving to a New Server

When migrating APG vNext to a new machine or URL, update the following in addition to copying files and the database:

  • Update the forumURL setting in Admin Panel → Settings → General
  • Update absolute URLs in email templates
  • Re-run the Full-Text index setup if moving to a new SQL Server instance

Full instructions are available in the Upgrade Guide. Post questions in the support forum.

Moving Individual Posts in APG vNext

APG vNext provides moderators with tools to move individual posts between threads and forum sections. This is essential when a reply goes off-topic, when a question was posted in the wrong forum, or when a long thread needs to be split into more focused separate discussions for better organization and discoverability.

Moving a Single Post

To move a single post, use the Move Post option in the post moderation menu. A dialog lets you specify the target thread by URL or ID. The post detaches from the current thread and reattaches to the target at the appropriate chronological position. The original thread retains a stub indicating the post was moved. The poster receives a notification with a link to the new location of their content.

Splitting a Thread

Moderators can split a thread at any post when a discussion diverges significantly from the original topic. All posts from the selected split point onward move to a new thread created in the same forum. The moderator enters a title for the new thread before execution. Both threads remain accessible at their URLs after the split. The action is logged in the audit trail with the moderator's identity and a timestamp for full accountability.

Merging Threads

To consolidate duplicate questions or related discussions, moderators can merge one thread into another. All posts from the source thread are appended to the target in chronological order. The source thread is closed with a redirect notice pointing to the merged destination. Merging is irreversible through the standard UI, so moderators must confirm the correct source and target before executing to avoid combining unrelated discussions. Post move and merge operations are powerful tools for maintaining a well-organized forum that is easy for both members and search engines to navigate effectively.
