Getting Help with APG vNext

APG vNext Live Demo - What to Expect

APG vNext has a hosted live demo environment that lets prospective customers explore the forum software without installing anything. The demo gives full access to the end-user experience (posting, replying, searching, uploading files, setting profile preferences) and a restricted admin panel view showing the major configuration options.

Accessing the Demo

The demo is available at aspplayground.net/download.aspx. Use the demo credentials provided on the page - no registration required.

What You Can Test in the Demo

  • Thread creation, replies, quoting, and quick reply
  • File and image upload (limited to 1MB in demo)
  • Search (full-text and keyword)
  • Member profiles, avatars, and notification preferences
  • Mobile responsive layout (resize your browser or use DevTools mobile emulation)
  • Skin/theme switching if multiple themes are enabled

What Is Different in Production

  • Demo data is reset every 24 hours
  • Admin panel access is read-only in the demo
  • Email sending is disabled in the demo
  • Some advanced features (SSO, LDAP, API) require a licensed installation to test

Requesting a Custom Demo

For enterprise evaluations, contact support to arrange a private demo session with your specific use case configured (custom skin, LDAP integration, existing data import test).

What the APG vNext Admin Control Panel Demo Shows

The admin control panel is the operational heart of every APG vNext installation. The demo gives prospective customers a guided overview of the most commonly used sections without requiring a full installation. Key sections visible in the demo include the Dashboard (real-time community statistics), User Management (member search, approval queue, ban management), Forum Management (category and forum structure, permissions), Moderation Queue, Email Configuration, and Appearance settings. The demo admin panel is pre-populated with realistic sample data — 500 members, 2,000 threads, and 15,000 posts — giving a realistic sense of how the interface performs at small-to-medium community scale.

Evaluating APG vNext Beyond the Demo

The hosted demo provides an accurate overview of the user interface and feature set, but cannot fully replicate the performance characteristics, customisation depth, or integration options of a locally installed instance. For a thorough evaluation, download and install APG vNext in a local or staging environment where you can:

  • Test with your actual SQL Server version and configuration
  • Apply your preferred skin or begin skin customisation
  • Configure and test your email server integration
  • Import a small sample of your existing forum data (if migrating)
  • Test LDAP or OAuth integration with your identity provider
  • Measure real load times with your hosting infrastructure

Demo Environment Limitations and What They Mean

The APG vNext demo environment has intentional limitations to prevent misuse and manage server costs. File upload is restricted to 1MB (production supports up to 50MB per file by default). Email sending is disabled (all notification emails are silently dropped). Advanced moderation actions (IP bans, member purge) are restricted to prevent demo data corruption. The API is read-only in the demo to prevent programmatic data extraction. None of these limitations exist in a properly licensed production installation, where the full feature set including API write access, email integration, and large file uploads are available from the first day of use.

Running Your Own Private Evaluation Instance

For team evaluations where multiple stakeholders need to review APG vNext simultaneously, consider setting up a private evaluation instance on a cloud server rather than relying on the shared public demo. A minimal APG vNext evaluation setup requires a Windows Server 2016+ VM with IIS, SQL Server Express (free), and .NET Framework 4.8. The entire setup takes about 45 minutes following the installation guide, and gives your team an unrestricted environment to explore all features at your own pace without time pressure or data resets.

Comparing APG vNext to Competitors in the Demo

Many community administrators evaluating APG vNext run the demo alongside demonstrations of competitor platforms (Discourse, Invision Community, XenForo). When making this comparison, focus on factors that are specific to ASP.NET/IIS/Windows Server environments — APG vNext's native compatibility with the Microsoft stack means zero friction with Active Directory authentication, SQL Server, and Windows hosting environments that other platforms require additional plugins or workarounds to support. The demo also demonstrates APG vNext's lightweight footprint: the default forum loads in under one second on a modest virtual server, making it competitive on performance even before Cloudflare caching is applied.
