Academic and Non-Profit Pricing for APG vNext

ASP Playground offers discounted licensing for qualifying academic institutions and registered non-profit organisations. This thread discusses how to request academic or non-profit pricing, what documentation is required, and what the discount structure looks like for upgrade purchases specifically.

Who Qualifies for Academic Pricing

  • Accredited universities, colleges, and technical schools
  • K-12 educational institutions with a verifiable .edu domain
  • Research institutions affiliated with accredited universities
  • Educational non-profits with a formal academic mission

Commercial training companies, bootcamps, and for-profit online education platforms do not qualify for academic pricing, even if they serve students.

Who Qualifies for Non-Profit Pricing

  • 501(c)(3) organisations in the United States (or equivalent registered charity status internationally)
  • Open-source project communities operating as registered non-profits
  • Charitable foundations with an active registration number

Requesting Discounted Upgrade Pricing

To request academic or non-profit upgrade pricing, contact the APG team via the contact form before completing your purchase. Include:

  1. Your organisation name and website URL
  2. Your current APG vNext license order ID (from your original purchase confirmation)
  3. Your organisation type (academic institution or registered non-profit)
  4. A link to or copy of your official registration or accreditation documentation

Once verified, a discounted upgrade purchase link is generated and sent to the email address on the original order. The discount applies to the upgrade license only, not to annual support renewal.

Upgrade Pricing Structure

Standard upgrade pricing is based on the version gap between your current license and the current release. Academic and non-profit organisations typically qualify for a 30–40% reduction on the published upgrade price. The exact discount depends on the verification outcome and is applied at the time of purchase generation.

-- Steps after receiving your discounted upgrade link:
1. Purchase the upgrade using the provided link
2. Note your new order ID
3. Download the latest APG vNext package from the member area
4. Follow the upgrade guide: /upgrade.aspx
5. Run the SQL upgrade scripts in sequential order
6. Update your license key in Admin Panel → About → License

Multi-Seat and Campus Licensing

For universities deploying APG vNext across multiple departments or schools, multi-seat licensing is available at a per-seat discount. Contact the team with the number of intended deployments — each deployment is a separate IIS application with its own database. A campus-wide license covering up to five deployments is available at a flat rate for qualifying institutions.

License Transfer for Academic Institutions

When an academic institution purchases an APG vNext license and then assigns it to a different department, faculty member, or IT administrator, the license remains tied to the institution — not the individual. Institutional licenses can be transferred internally without incurring a transfer fee, provided the new installation is still at the same organisation and meets the same academic eligibility criteria that qualified the original purchase for a discount.

If the institution is acquired, merges with another organisation, or changes its non-profit status, contact APG support before the status change is finalised to discuss license continuity options.

Annual Support Renewal for Academic Licenses

APG vNext licenses include one year of priority email support and access to all minor version updates released during that period. After the first year, support renewal is optional — the software continues to function indefinitely, but access to new versions and support tickets requires an active renewal.

Academic and non-profit renewal pricing is published on request through the contact form. Renewal should be completed before the expiry date to avoid a gap in version access coverage. Gap periods do not affect the ability to use the software — they only affect access to upgrades released during the gap.

Frequently Asked Questions About Academic Upgrade Pricing

Can a student organisation at a university qualify for academic pricing?

Student organisations that are officially registered with and hosted by an accredited university can qualify, provided the university IT department confirms the affiliation in writing. The organisation's forum must be run as a non-commercial community service, not a commercial enterprise.

We are a government-funded research lab — do we qualify?

Government-funded research institutions qualify under the non-profit category if they hold a formal non-profit registration. Pure government agencies (e.g., federal or state agency websites) do not qualify for either academic or non-profit pricing but may qualify for volume government licensing. Contact the APG team for details.

Our previous APG vNext license was purchased at full price. Can we apply for retroactive academic pricing?

Retroactive pricing adjustments are not available. The discounted pricing applies to new purchases and upgrade purchases made after academic or non-profit status has been verified. Existing licenses can be renewed at the discounted rate going forward once status is confirmed.

How long does verification take?

Verification typically takes 1–3 business days after documentation is received. During high-traffic periods (start of academic semesters), processing may take up to 5 business days. Plan your upgrade timing accordingly.
